Cash bail in Hawai‘i drives jail overcrowding & injustice - here’s how we can fix it.

A brief business meeting will be followed by the continuation of an important discussion opened at our recent Civil Liberties Symposium. As the State ponders the rebuild of the O‘ahu Community Correctional Center and grapples statewide with rampant prison and jail overcrowding, learn more about Hawaii’s part in a nationwide ACLU “Smart Justice” campaign to halve America’s incarceration rate while confronting the institutional racism and biases that create an unequal system of justice for the poor, people of color, and the mentally ill.

It’s a huge undertaking that will take a lot of community support. In Hawai‘i, we’re starting with reforming our bail system. Staff will share key findings on the national landscape on mass incarceration, and from our new 2017 ACLU of Hawai‘i Bail Study – why our local jails are full of people awaiting trial who simply cannot afford bail. Learn more about how Hawaii’s reliance on cash bail harms people, families, and communities, does not make us safer, and the proven policy alternatives that can replace this unworkable and expensive system.

Please join us to celebrate the 226th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights, and the promise of freedom and equal rights it holds for everyone. Help us plan for the 2018 legislative session as we anticipate working on bail reform, voting rights reform, and immigration issues.

We hope to see you there!
