Please come and please bring a friend! Join Kaua‘i based board member Esther Solomon and staff of the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai‘i for an evening of community conversation on civil rights in Hawai‘i and the nation. We’ll discuss some of the ACLU’s recent local work including:

  • Hawaii’s part in the ACLU’s nationwide “Smart Justice” initiative to halve the number of people in jail and prison while addressing racial bias in the criminal justice system.
  • Immigration and family detention policies that violate human and civil rights.
  • Equal opportunity for Hawai‘i keiki under Title IX, and the critical need to change the culture of funding in local school sports programs
  • Government responses to homelessness that make better, and ones that make it worse. Why “sit/lie” bans and “sweeps” threaten civil rights for everyone.
  • Voting rights and voting for the constitution.

Special needs accommodation: Please share your request to office@acluhawaii.org by Tuesday, August 22nd or call Kit at (808) 522-5904. We will always try to accommodate requests. St. Michael’s is ADA-accessible. Free parking, and light refreshments served.
