Honolulu, Hawai‘i: The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai‘i (“ACLU”) encourages any Hawai‘i resident interested in preserving individual rights and liberties to join the Hawai‘i delegation to the 2018 ACLU Membership Conference happening June 10-12 in Washington, D.C. The Conference will gather civil rights defenders from across the country for education, fellowship and celebration, including a visit to Capitol Hill to speak with lawmakers.  It is the first nationwide ACLU conference in a decade. Just some of the many speakers are:

·      Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors

·      Civil rights icon, Congressman John Lewis

·      Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards

·      Equal Justice Initiative Executive Director & bestselling author Bryan Stevenson

·      Editor and Publisher of “The Nation,” Katrina Vanden Heuvel

·      Senator Elizabeth Warren

·      Actor and activist Kerry Washington

The theme of the conference is “You Belong Here.” Executive Director Joshua Wisch said: “The ACLU of Hawai‘i aims for a Membership Conference delegation that reflects the diversity and spirit of our islands and showcases our young leaders – those who will carry on the work of defending civil rights into the future.”

The ACLU is offering four, all expenses paid trips for young leaders aged 21 to 25, residing on any island. It’s a fantastic opportunity to engage, learn and take action to defend fundamental freedoms. The scholarships include air, ground transportation, lodging and all conference fees. But time is short. An application essay (up to two pages) must be received by Thursday, May 10. For details on how to apply, visit: www.acluhi.org/mc2018.
