HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An investigation is underway after an inmate at Oahu Community Correctional Center died early Wednesday morning.

He was identified by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation as Eric A. Scotton, 33.

The incident began at approximately 1 a.m. Wednesday when OCCC staff called for a medical emergency, the department said.

Police and DCR said Scotton was assaulted by his cellmate, a 49-year-old man.

Emergency Medical Services and fire crews took over lifesaving treatment, but Scotton was pronounced dead at around 1:50 a.m., officials said.

The Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

Scotton was in jail on attempted murder and arson charges, accused of stabbing and burning his 67-year-old roommate in 2023. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Honolulu Police Department’s homicide detail and scientific investigation section assisted with the initial on-scene investigation.
