HONOLULU (KHON2) – The Vice President of the ACLU of Hawaii Board of Directors told KHON2 that he doesn’t believe a constitutional change will be challenged.
“After same-sex marriage was found to be constitutional, the voters of Hawaii gave the authority to the legislature to ban same-sex marriage, and the ACLU always felt this was a constitutional power that the legislature never should have had,” Jeff Hong explained.
“That legislature exercise that power and ban same-sex marriage. They rescinded that ban and so then we had marriage available,” he added.
“But it’s always stuck in there, in the constitution, to give them that blatant authority. And now is the time to rescind that power so that the people, again, could weigh-in on whether the legislature should even have that power. I’m glad the people of Hawaii voted to remove discrimination from our Bill of Rights,” Hong concluded.
