The local ACLU, located in Honolulu is a state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, the country’s largest civil liberties and civil rights organization. The ACLU is a private, non-profit non-partisan organization that works to promote and defend civil rights and civil liberties through legal, legislative, and public education initiatives. As the ACLU of Hawai‘i has grown, there is a current need for a Communications Manager position.

The position requires willingness to work and travel outside the 9 to 5 hours of the normal workday, including evening and weekend meetings and/or events. The position is an exempt position. Currently, the Communications Manager position is a full-time position.

The Communications Manager shall work under the direction and supervision of the Deputy Director and has these core areas of responsibility:

Content creation: Full charge graphic designer (Adobe Creative Suite based) and writer to strategize, plan and deliver online, print and other assets that enhance and advance affiliate mission and goals; creatively coordinate public education work across several interlocking areas: including legal, legislative, and development activities;

Digital marketing: Manage, grow and expand ACLU of Hawaii’s online presence through our website(s). Includes Twitter, Facebook, and other strategically relevant online properties;

Media relations: Assist with managing incoming media inquiries and building relationships with journalists; create, execute, and measure media campaigns;

Marketing strategy and campaigns: Create, manage and execute strategic campaigns for public facing communications;

Analytics: Use online measurement tools to report campaign results; continuously improve on those metrics;

Development and executive support: As needed, projects to support fundraising initiatives, special presentations and other work as assigned;

Events and event planning: Help plan and execute events for the ACLU of Hawai‘i;

Integrate communications channels: Campaign planning for integrated and supportive work in social media, print, radio, video;

Public engagement: Recruit, train and supervise volunteers and interns to implement special events and affiliate priorities (currently includes Davis Levin First Amendment Conference, Youth Affairs, student internships, speakers bureau).

Qualifications:

  • BA in communications, graphic design, public relations or related field.
  • 2 years (minimum) professionally using Adobe Creative Suite. Portfolio of relevant work. Experience in the “ground-up” production of radio ads, TV or video work, infographics or webinars a plus. HTML experience a plus. Professional prepress, printing/publishing skills essential.
  • Confident communicator and presenter, ability to present concepts verbally, accept and adapt to critique.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, layout and design. Able to express complex concepts cleanly and visually.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Superior project and time management skills.
  • Creative and flexible.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media, online culture.
  • Self motivated with a positive and professional approach.
  • Able to manage and work effectively with other staff and to motivate and interact with diverse volunteers, donors and members, community groups;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as a public spokesperson and advocate; a “quick study” on an array of issues, including the ability to understand and articulate legal concepts and other complex issues and communicate them to a variety of audiences;
  • A demonstrated commitment to the cause of civil liberties and civil rights and the mission of the ACLU;
  • Personal enthusiasm and optimism, along with a sense of humor.
